Environment Minister Djevdet Chakuroov has signed 28 new decrees, according to the European Union's (EU) Habitats directive, so paving the way for the inclusion of 28 new zones in Bulgaria's European environmental network Natura 2000, the Ministry of Environment and Water Affairs (MOEW) said on September 8.
The zones will be published in the State Gazette. The new members of the Bulgarian Natura 2000 network are Rayanovtsi, Ponor, Zlatiyata, Ovcharitsa Lake, Straldja Complex, Adata Tundja, Obnova, Rui, Chelopechene fish ponds, Island next to Gorni Tsibur, Chairya, Gorni Dubnik Telish, Tsibursko Swamp, Sreburna, Orsoya fish ponds, Stenata, Garvansko Swamp, Maluk Preslavets Swamp, Central Balkan, Vardim Island, Mechka fish ponds, Lomovete, Aprilitsi, Dolni Bogrov-Kazichene, Pirin, Pyasuchnik Dam, Byala Reka river and Devetashko Plateau.
Another 50 zones are waiting for the process of preparing final orders to be completed, MOEW said. These areas are also designed to preserve the population of wild birds and were approved with a decision of the Cabinet Nr.122/2007.
The European Commission is pursuing legal action against Poland and Bulgaria for failing to adequately assess the impact of construction projects on protected nature areas.
Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes.
