Kamelia Boncheva, who was kidnapped on July 10 after trying to deliver a "down payment" to the kidnappers of her husband Angel Bonchev, former president of Litex Lovech football club, was found in good condition at 4am on July 30 2008, the Interior Ministry said.
Boncheva was found by a police patrol in Sofia's Kazichene neighbourhood. A day before, Angel Bonchev donated 157 000 euro to a foundation called Utre za Vseki, which fights breast cancer. Bonchev told commercial bTV that he had gathered the money from friends to serve as the ransom money for his wife.
"For 19 days I have had no news about my wife, so I decided to donate the money to the foundation instead," he said. About six hours later, Kamelia Boncheva was released.
Magdalena Angelova, Utre za Vseki media officer, told The Sofia Echo that it was bTV that contacted them and said that they had a person who wanted to donate money. "They called us and we agreed. All money will be accounted for, we are legally registered in Bulgaria and under constant monitoring by the authorities, so there is nothing wrong in Bonchev wanting to donate money for a good cause such as fighting breast cancer.
"For me the story has a happy ending because first a family has been reunited and secondly people suffering from breast cancer will have a centre where they can get the help they need," Angelova said.
"I don't think that Utre za Vseki will get a negative image for accepting Bonchev's money, because the money has been donated to a good cause. I think this should stop the tendency to only discuss negative news."
The Bonchevi family drama started on May 22, when Angel Bonchev was kidnapped in front of his home in Sofia. He was held by the kidnappers for about 50 days. Despite police efforts, his whereabouts remained unknown.
On July 10, police said that Angel Bonchev had been released but his wife Kamelia was taken in her attempt to deliver a "down payment". Bonchev was found by police patrol in Sofia's Knyazhevo neighbourhood and taken to hospital.
He was in good physical condition but according to the doctors he had been under the influence of strong drugs injected by the kidnappers. During his captivity, two of his fingers were severed.
