Down's syndrome parenting group forms in Sofia

Long sent off to special institutions in villages, where they would remain unseen and forgotten, or kept stored away at home, not talked about in one's daily circles, having a child with Down's syndrome has long been a social stigma in Bulgaria.

In 2008, for the first time in Bulgaria, World Down Syndrome Day (March 21, with the day being selected to represent the significance of trisomy 21) was observed, with a festive ceremony at the National Palace of Children in Sofia.

In spring 2008, a group of parents Bulgarian and foreign came together to form a Down's syndrome parenting group, which is in the process of registering to become an official association. The regular meetings of the group feature talks by specialists in various developmental and behavioural issues, such as speech development and physical therapy. It is also a forum to share thoughts and concerns.

On Saturday June 14 at 4pm in the centre of Sofia, the parents' group will have a meeting at which will be discussed behavioural concerns. If you are interested in attending or for more information, please e-mail stpankratz@gmail.com to find out the exact address.

Meetings are open to all interested - parents of children with Down's syndrome (called синдрома на даун/sindroma na Daun in Bulgarian), field specialists and supporters.

Things are changing.
