Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev has promised Emil Kostadinov (no relation), president of CSKA Sofia football club to help find who owns CSKA Sofia, Bulgarian-language Dnevnik daily quoted Kostadinov on June 11 2008.
"We asked Stanishev for his support and he promised us to help clear out all details about CSKA's ownership within two days," Kostadinov said after the meeting.
Kostadinov met Stanishev to discuss the issue with CSKA Sofia financial crisis that cost the team its place in next season's Uefa's Champions League tournament. The meeting was attended by Borislav Mihailov, president of Bulgarian Football Union (BFU), Vessela Lecheva, head of the State Agency for Sport and Youth, and CSKA fans.
CSKA Sofia debts totaled two million leva, Kostadinov was quoted as saying by Dnevnik.
"We owe nothing to National Social Security Institute (NSSI)," Kostadinov said, referring to allegations that CSKA Sofia owed millions of leva to NSSI. The allegations were raised earlier by Todor Batkov, president of arch-rivals Levski who took CSKA's place in Uefa's Champions League.
"We only owe two million leva in taxes which we will cover by June 30" Kostadinov said. This means that CSKA would at least remain in Bulgaria's first devision called Group A next season.
Mihailov said that a check will be launched into the financial status of all clubs in Bulgaria, as well as the BFU.
On June 5, following the public outbreak after Uefa decided to ban CSKA from Champions League due to the club's financial problems, Stanishev asked the State Agency for National Security (SANS) to perform a thorough check into who owns the club.
He also asked National Revenue Agency (NRA) to check CSKA's finances for the 2002/07 period. NRA will also check the sources of income for CSKA's entire management for the same period. This prompted the resignation of Alexander Tomov from the post of president of CSKA.
On June 11 Tomov, who CSKA's fan club blames for all of club's problems, sent an open letter to the media saying that he welcomed SANS and NRA's checks and called them "timely". He also said he had never received any kind of payment during his tenure as president of CSKA.
