Fifty-nine projects from 58 Bulgarian municipalities have applied for technical assistance funding. The biggest citiies to apply are Sofia, Varna, Rousse, Haskovo, Turgovishte and Yambol.

Bulgaria is set to receive 1.8 billion euro under the environment operational programme. An assessment committee will examine the applications and will pick the winners. The inter-departmental committee for the coordination of projects under the environment opeartional programme will do a background check to ensure that the projects selected are not being financed by more than one programme.

MOEW and the Finance Ministry will control the utilisation of funds.
