Sofia governor to reject car tax hike within week

Sofia regional governor Todor Modev said on March 12 he would return the city hall ordinance raising local taxes in Sofia for re-evaluation by municipal councilors within one week.

During that time, a working group to decide whether the entire ordinance would be returned to the council, or just the part stipulating an increase to the tax on vehicles, Modev said, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

The Local Taxes Act does not allow cars to be differentiated by age, but the ordinance issued by the municipality provides for different taxes for cars that are five to 10 years old and for vehicles older than 10 years.

According to the ordinance, voted by the council on March 6, the tax on cars that are five to 10 years old would rise by 30 per cent, and a 60 per cent increase was levied on vehicles older than 10 years.

Because Sofia municipal council did not observe the February 29 deadline for announcing the new local taxes rates and delayed publishing the new rates by a week, the taxes could end up being illegal, experts warned.

The city hall was aware of that, but should the tax hikes be rejected, it would compensate the 40 million leva shortfall with revenues from selling city property, mediapool.bg quoted deputy mayor for finance Minko Gerdjikov as saying.
