This week: Recycle your batteries

Mon, Jun 25 2007 09:00 CET 234 Views

Batteries are among the most toxic waste we produce.

Nickel, lead, mercury, cadmium, alkaline/zinc - these heavy metals have no place in a landfill, because these active ingredients leak into our soil, water supplies and eventually end up in the food chain.

Yet in Bulgaria, batteries regularly go in the rubbish bin, just like ordinary domestic waste. The Environment Ministry has appointed Bateria AD - once the makers of the well-known Nikopol battery brand - to take care of the recycling of old batteries; however, the system is not yet in place. Once it is, just like everywhere else in the world, we are to have special bins at collection points - usually inside shops that sell batteries - where our old batteries will go before being taken to the nearest battery recycling plant.

For the time being, rather than throw them away, it is best to collect batteries, waiting for recycling to begin. Alternatively, those who travel abroad can take them to collection points overseas, as a number of people already do.
