This week: Don't leave appliances on stand-by

It's common sense to switch off the telly before leaving the house, but not all of us know that leaving appliances on stand-by will still consume electricity. I've read various estimates as to how much a TV draws from the grid in this idle mode, and the figure seem to vary between eight and 12 per cent of the total consumption. The exact number is not that important. The idea is that appliances left on stand-by consume electricity while unused. Considering that here in Bulgaria only a tiny, insignificant fraction of our power is green - solar, wind, other clean sources - it strikes me as important that we consider and reduce our electricity consumption as much as possible.

Most "green" households tend to have an extension lead with a switch that links all electrical appliances in a room, so that they can all be easily switched off at the end of the day. Personally, I find that this works rather nicely and I am now used to the fact that at night there are no glowing lights in the house - from the laptop, wireless, printer, fax machine, TV etc. With the exception of the fridge, the house goes in "zero environmental footprint" mode at night. You could say it goes to sleep.
