Earth Day may be gone, but it's still tree planting season. On Sunday May 5, Gorichka joined forces with Project Vitosha to plant three acres of wood around Momina Skala, close to Zlatnite Mostove on Vitosha Mountain. Hundreds of trees had to be cut down because of severe infestation in 2001 and it's taken a while for the area to be replanted. Project Vitosha works with companies and organisations that wish to adopt a patch of forest. So far the entire area around Momina Skala has been adopted. Along with Gorichka, The English-American School and Toyota Bulgaria are among the benefactors. Apart from planting, the "foster families" take care of the trees until they reach maturity.
Planting trees is a sure way of not only improving our immediate environment, but also helping prevent climate change. Cutting down forests on mass scale is a worldwide problem that has resulted in us losing our natural CO2 filter. It's no surprise then that most carbon-neutral schemes contribute either through reforestation or support for the clean-energy sector. Planting trees is as easy as it is rewarding. But do hurry as the warm weather has already shortened the tree-planting season.
