Bulgarians lack information on the work of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), research of the Institute of Sociology of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) shows. US Agency for International Development (USAID) provided funding.
Head of the Plovdiv Court of Appeal Radka Petrova said that the project launched to popularise the work of the SJC was of importance.
USAID Judicial Strengthening Initiative (SJI) director Ken Stuart said that the main task of magistrates was to protect independence and promote accountability.
Research focused on Bulgarians aged 18 to 30 and 30 to 75, as well as journalists. Results showed that SJC functions are familiar only to part of the elder participants. Young people have only heard of SJC.
SJC has negative image among most elder participants, resulting from the critical attitude towards the judicial system as a whole.
Journalists have enough information on quota participation in the SJC but their knowledge of the council as a whole is still insufficient.
A film on the JSC work will be aired on Bulgarian National Television (BNT) as part of the media campaign for popularising the institution. Discs with the film will be distributed to faculties in universities.
