Mayors from Bulgarian cities and towns organised a demonstration to protest against the murder of Elin Pelin mayor Yanko Yankov.
Nearly 200 people joined the demonstration, which started in Sofia in a minute of silence. The mayors of Blagoevgrad, Veliko Turnovo, Vidin, Kavarna, Dobrich, Gabrovo, Stara Zagora, Yambol and Turgovishte joined the initiative.
The civic initiative will be carried out under the slogan Society Against Violence, Focus news agency reported.
Sliven mayor Yordan Lechkov, one of the organisers of the event, said that the murder targeted the position of the mayor, rather than an individual.
Society should exhibit zero tolerance to such acts, said Lechkov. The irresponsibility of official institutions led to such events as people lacked respect and belief in their functioning, said Lechkov.
Yankov was shot dead on the night of January 9 in the garden of his house. Police work on various murder theories among which personal conflict and financial interests.
Paladin Property Development is the investment/construction firm in charge of the project.
Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes.
Seven arrested, including ‘The Squirrel’ who was found in possession of 10 00 euro, Interior Ministry says. Mobile phones, computer equipment and drug paraphernalia seized.
Maximum temperatures across the country will remain mostly below zero.
The first tremor was at about 12.34am, followed by another three minutes later. Their epicentres were located between the towns of Radnevo and Topolovgrad.
There was no risk of blackouts caused by insufficient power supply, Economy Minister Traicho Traikov told Bulgarian National Radio.
