WITH a name like Sin City, one can think of a hundred reasons or temptations to visit this new club. Located in the centre of Sofia on Hristo Belchev near Vazrajdane Square, the building itself is an imposing structure - three stories tall and resembling the Parthenon in Greece, with red lights illuminating it from the ground up. The Bulgarian designer Julian Tahov was inspired by the classic design of the building and kept this theme running throughout the interior, with a combination of classic Italian paintings and Greek motifs united with modern decor and the designer's passionate insight.
In communist times, this building was a drab workers' club, known to some as the Cultural Home of the Trade Union of Bulgaria. The structure was named after the infamous communist leader Georgi Dimitrov, whose embalmed body was displayed in a mausoleum in the centre of Sofia for over 40 years and took six attempts to destroy in 1999.
Today, Sin City is all about having a decadent and hedonistic great night out. Though it has only been open for two-and-a-half months, Sin City just held a huge grand opening celebration that 3000 people attended, including Milen Velchev - a former candidate for mayor of Sofia, and Professor Andrey Pantev, as well as an Italian-American soap opera star, Victor Alfieri, who was quoted as saying there's no place like Sin City in Hollywood or anywhere else in the world. At the moment, only the club's downstairs is open, but after the New Year, the renovation project will be complete and the second floor will also be open and ready for partying.
But what makes this club different from all the other clubs in and around Sofia? For one, it's open every night, and with bodyguards at the door dressed in black suits, and a three leva entrance fee, Sin City not only feels safer, more luxurious and welcoming than other fashionable clubs, but its stunning interior design is like no other in the city, and perhaps the world. As designed by Tahov, the club has many rooms with wooden floors, a seemingly microcosmic city including Folk Club Help, a posh clubroom; Mistral Coffee, a modern coffee shop; Lobby Bar, the entrance and hangout area; and Hemingway, a shop for various products ranging from perfume and roses to jewellery. These are only a sample of the rooms in Sin City, as the rest of the project will be revealed when the second floor opens.
Though each room has its own charm, Folk Club Help is the highlight of the establishment. The interior is a mix of classic and modern, with reproductions of Michelangelo's paintings behind striped layers of Plexiglass. The decor is red, black, and grey, fashioned after Tahov's logo, a classical hero with snakes circling his head and the letters J and T intertwined above. The logo is featured throughout Sin City, as is the classic Greek meandrous design of a never-ending "T", modelled after a river with no beginning and no end. With the accent at the top of every column and reaching towards the lighted, leather ceiling, Tahov's design successfully draws people's attention upwards and gets them dancing on the elevated central dance floor. Above is a huge replica of Tahov's logo surrounded by Michelangelo's paintings, all illuminated. The low tables and chairs made from expensive modern wood are meant to add a relaxed, lounging vibe to the huge Help Club, a concept that comes from Brazil. With leather and faux fur on the chairs, walls, columns and ceilings, everything in the club is expensive and designer and makes for an ambience of absolute luxury. Some even claim that the toilet stalls, with leather walls and designer lights, are the nicest toilets in Sofia.
The DJ stage is located in the corner on an elevated platform, and the VIP lounge is raised as well, overlooking the entire room. With huge tables and an enormous curved fluffy sofa, lights designed by Tahov separate the each section of the sofa. A VIP bar and bathroom add to the posh ambience. Reservations are highly recommended for all parts of the Folk Club Help, but the elegant VIP section is often booked well in advance. The club is already a favourite nightspot for foreigners and the social elite of Bulgaria, and the general vibe is that Sin City is the exciting new place in Sofia to have a great time in a safe and fascinating place. There surely is no other club like this in Sofia, and the design is worth sampling for its eye-candy appeal alone. With red lights illuminating the entire club, the Sin City is complete.
