BULGARIA'S top sumo wrestler Kaloyan Mahlyanov, playing under the name of Kotooshu, beat Asashoryu on July 17 to end the Mongolian Yokozuna's winning streak, toppling him from his position as the leader in the current standings at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.
Komusubi Kotooshu recovered from a powerful blow to the face he received at the start of the brawl, which had sent him stumbling backward and almost out of the ring. After the Bulgarian recovered his balance, the two wrestlers locked for some time at the centre of the ring.
Kotooshu took control of the situation and threw Asashoryu over his right shoulder. The Mongolian champion was sent head first into the dirt, much to the cheers and appreciation of the crowd.
This was the first defeat in 24 games for Asashoryu, who has won the remarkable total of 13 cups in his career.
The Mongolian wrestler is now tied with Wakanosato at the top of the tournament's current standings with a record of seven wins and one loss. Kotooshu's record up to this stage of the competition is six wins and two defeats.
"I'm very happy with this victory. Before the match I knew that, it would be only if I gave my very best, I will have a chance against this powerful opponent." Kotooshu told reporters.
Earlier on Sunday, Wakanosato, ranked maegashira, defeated Kokkali. The winner sent the Georgian wrestler out of the ring's bounds with a series of powerful shoves.
Iwakiyama, also ranked maegashira, had enjoyed a series of wins earlier in the tournament, but suffered his second loss in two days.  He was beaten by one of the crowd favorites - Takami
sakari. Both wrestlers have a record of six wins and two defeats.
