Because of its location, Bulgaria has been known for its mineral waters since Roman times and most of the spa resorts here are remains of Roman baths and settlements. The best-known spa resorts are Velingrad, Sandanski, Bankya, Devin, Pomorie, Varna, Albena, Kyustendil, Strelcha, Sliven, Vurshec, Stara Zagora, Narechenski Bani, Momin Prohod, Pavel Banya, Sapareva Banya and Hissarya, among others. The water in the spa resorts has a curative effect on various ailments; sometimes springs in the same resort have different chemical and mineral compositions.
Devin
Devin is a renowned spa and holiday resort. It is situated amid the hills in the heart of the Rhodope mountains. Devin has several mineral water springs with a temperature of between 37 and 44 °C. The water is clear, colourless, palatable, odourless, mildly mineralised, and contains hydro carbonates of sodium and small quantities of fluorine. Devin is suitable for the spa and climatic treatment of a wide range of diseases :of the locomotor system, cardiovascular diseases and nervous disorders. Bankya is a well-known health resort. It is situated at the foothills of the Lyulin mountain, 17km from Sofia. The mineral water is slightly mineralised, hypothermal, hydro carbonic-sulphate-sodium. It is clear and colourless with a temperature of 36.5-37 °C. It's also tasty to drink. A favourable climate makes Bankya suitable for year-round spa treatment, as well as for general prophylactics. Bankya developed as a resort for the rehabilitation of cardio-vascular conditions. It is suitable for the treatment of cardio-vascular diseases, nervous system disturbances and metabolic disturbances.
Hissarya
The well-known spa of Augusta (the ancient name of Hissarya) is situated in the centre of Bulgaria, in the southern folds of the Sredna Gora Mountain, 42km north of Plovdiv and 160km east of Sofia. Hissarya today is a modern spa resort. It has 22 mineral springs with a total exploitation flow of about 2800 litres a minute and a temperature of 37-52°C. The mineral water is light, clear, colourless and flavourless. The water is mainly used for the treatment of diseases of the kidneys and secretary system, liver and gall bladder, the digestive system and pancreas. Sandanski
Sandanski is the warmest and sunniest town in Bulgaria with the least temperature variations throughout the year. The combination of balmy, health-giving weather and curative mineral waters makes Sandanski the perfect place for modern, science-based climatotherapy, spa treatment, rehabilitation, primary and secondary prophylactics and recreation. The resort specialises in the treatment of the upper respiratory tract, lung diseases of non-tubercular types and inflammation and degenerative diseases of the joints.
Velingrad
Velingrad is a well-known spa and climatic resort in south Bulgaria. It boasts the highest number of sunny days throughout the year in the country, and more than 80 mineral springs. The hyper thermal springs' temperatures range from 22°C to 88°C . They are slightly mineralised, containing fluorine and sulphate-carbonate-sodium. Successfully treated here are non-specific conditions of the respiratory tract: chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma; disturbances of the locomotor system: degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the joints, gout, periarthritis, tendinitis, bursitis; neurological disorders: neuroses, stress, neuritis, radiculitis and polyneuritis; gynaecological complaints; cardiovascular diseases: hypertonia and hypotonia, early forms of atherosclerosis and Buerger's disease.
