From different sources I was told about the Veggie Home. So after a very successful shopping expedition in Sofia's city centre a girlfriend and I decided to check out this new restaurant. So with hurting feet and a million bags we found our way to the restaurant, which is situated behind a row of houses on Patriarch Evtimii. It's a somewhat odd building, with a terrace/balcony and big glass windows. Inside it looks cosy. A very attractive and smiling waiter brought us to our table. Once seated, giving our feet a well-deserved rest, we took the place in. The walls had classic Bordeaux wallpaper, the table cloths looked like Indonesian batik. The waiter brought us a burner with essential oils. Nice touch. The menu was brought in. It looked like the many handmade books I have seen in Asia. Little pieces of wood decorating the cover. Inside a neatly written menu on delicate pieces of paper. The menu wasn't big, but very interesting and very reasonably priced at first glance. Main dishes and nice salads for 3,50 leva.
I was worried about not being able to smoke in such a healthy restaurant as I recently had an experience where at a health food restaurant we were scolded for smoking on the balcony. I didn't know that the restaurant owned the air in a two-metre diameter surrounding the restaurant. So in the end, we all went outside and smoked our cigarettes on the pavement like outcasts. Here, healthy food and cigarettes don't seem to contradict each other. Good air-conditioning has taken care of the problem of non-smokers taking offence at tobacco fume clouds circling their plate.
I was going to start with some Ayrian (mix of yoghurt and water) to drink, 0,70 leva, some humus and a spinach salad with parsley, sunflowers, nuts and raisins, 3,50 leva. For my friend, who wanted tea and had just arrived in Bulgaria three weeks ago, I ordered a pot of Moursalski Chai from the Rhodope Mountains, 2,50 leva. We decided to share the humus and she wanted the same salad I had picked, `cause that one sounded the best to her. When we waved to the waiter that we wanted to order, he brought us some sour dough bread with two dips nicely arranged on a wooden plate. One dip consisted of herbs and cream and the other one of herbs and olive oil. The bread was great; tasty full and heavy, like the sour dough bread I am used to from the many eco supermarkets in Amsterdam. The Ayrian, I must note, was made with what seemed to be homemade yoghurt. You hardly find yoghurt so full of flavour anymore, unless you're on some farm in the mountains. Meanwhile, we were so into all this healthy food that we wanted to order a main course. And bingo, we both came to the same conclusion again: Falafel, 3,50 leva. So we ordered that, eating our bread and dips, being very content, both with the food and with our purchases. The humus was nice as well; thick and tasty, and the plate was neatly decorated with red pepper and chickpeas. Our tea came in one great big teapot with the cutest handmade mugs. We fell in love with them instantly. I must say that this restaurant was winning points by the second, good service, good food, nice presentation on both plates and menu and a very nice atmosphere with nice touches. The only point of criticism I can viably utter is that I thought there were some decoration `mismatches' like the curtains or the garden lamps attached to the walls. But that hardly weighs up to any of the nice things the Veggie Home has to offer. We weren't very surprised when our falafels turned out to be great. They, in contrast to other falafels that I have had, were very crispy on the outside and had chunky pieces on the inside. The dish was served with a simple salad of cucumber and tomato, but when actually putting it into my mouth, I realised that the dressing was the big secret. I still haven't figured out what it was made of. All in all we had a great dinner, and in the end we'd ordered so much that we had to take our spinach salads home, without even having touched them. We paid our total bill of 19 leva and left very enthusiastic about the Veggie Home, already planning when to come again.

One of those places striving to be authentic but somehow a gimmicky joint.

If you're in the mood for a light dinner or a business lunch – one that is not too expensive and you only have, say, 60 to 90 minutes to spare – then you could do well to visit the Spaghetti Company.

The restaurant trade seems to suffer more than most during times of crisis and so it's nice that an old favourite has weathered the storm.

Word-of-mouth and the soft strumming of the Spanish guitar drew us to the newly opened Bodega* in Studentski Grad for a birthday celebration for four.

Overall, a good experience with dishes presented with style and imagination in accordance with Bulgarian traditions.
