I arrived at the restaurant trying to avoid getting wet, since outside it was raining cats and dogs. Six waiters guarded the entrance. Politely they told me that they only had seats available in the non-smoking area, which was on the second floor. At first sight it looked indeed quite charming, with its dark green Laura Ashley -like wallpaper. When seated, however, I was annoyed by the huge TV hanging above my head. The menu arrived, borne by a somewhat bored waitress. I opted for a green salad with four kinds of cheese and foie gras with fruit. My partner chose baked peppers and a veal stew with mashed potatoes. The salads were brought in. My inner voice told me to stir it around a bit for further inspection. And yes, always listen to your inner voice, I found lumps of sand it my salad. Not just a couple of sprinkles. But great heavy muddy lumps. I was shocked. But patiently I waited for the waitress; it took a long, long time. Apparently we were expected to fend for ourselves up there. Eventually my partner went downstairs to call the woman. She came, even more bored than before. For form's sake, she apologised and said she'd replace it. Meanwhile my foie gras arrived. It was a little too well done for my taste, but apart from that it was nice. The pieces of liver lay on a bed of pineapple and apple slices. The sauce was a bit heavy and syrupy, but then again, that's a minor detail. After some time, she appeared with another salad. I thought it would be extremely unlikely that there would yet again be something wrong with the salad, but having lived the experience once, I didn't want to live it again. I guess that you can understand my shock when I dug a fly out of the salad. This was too much, and just when my eyes widened in shock I observed a hair sticking out of my partner's veal stew. This evening turned out to be something like a part of an experimental art academy student film portraying culinary nightmares. Obviously the hair in the veal stew was not my partner's, since his hair is shorter and lighter than the one lying shamelessly in his dish. I had had enough; there was absolutely no point in staying any longer. I shoved my chair backwards in order to get up and put on my coat. Somehow my eyes caught sight of the heaps of dust lying in the corners of the room. Cleanliness obviously is not a priority in Tabiet. The waitress came, her attitude changed from bored to bluntly arrogant.
"This never happened before." she claimed resolutely as if this would erase the matter. "It doesn't matter, it happened to us. Not with one dish, but with three!" I said. My partner demanded a deduction of the dishes on the bill. The waitress refused and said, she would deduct the salad only. I was furious, but I didn't want to stay a second longer in this so-called restaurant. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone, in fact I would advise anyone to steer clear of it! Especially after, on a very personal note, I had an extremely uncomfortable night because of problems in the stomach area. So the one dish that seemed to be okay turned out to have some problem. But honestly, with these kinds of low levels of hygiene, I am not surprised.
One of those places striving to be authentic but somehow a gimmicky joint.
If you're in the mood for a light dinner or a business lunch – one that is not too expensive and you only have, say, 60 to 90 minutes to spare – then you could do well to visit the Spaghetti Company.
The restaurant trade seems to suffer more than most during times of crisis and so it's nice that an old favourite has weathered the storm.
Word-of-mouth and the soft strumming of the Spanish guitar drew us to the newly opened Bodega* in Studentski Grad for a birthday celebration for four.
Overall, a good experience with dishes presented with style and imagination in accordance with Bulgarian traditions.
How restaurants used to be: very fancy decor, obsequious waiters, mutra and mutressas, very average food and very high prices. 300 leva for 4 with one bottle of wine - with so many better and more reasonable restaurants in the immediate vicinity there is no reason to ever return here
I also had a dreadful evening at this restaurant in the summer of 2008 - we were offered fresh fish and served it without ever being told how much it cost or weighed and when presented with the bill my fish cost 85 leva with the explanation that it had weighed one kilo. what I had actually eaten was a fairly small fish but since it was already in my stomach there was no arguing. Both the waiting staff and the manager were arrogant and rude and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone
