THE Animus Association is perhaps the most powerful NGO in Bulgaria working with victims of trafficking.
It was founded in 1994. Since 1998, Animus has been the Bulgarian partner in the "La Strada" international programme for the prevention of trafficking in women in Central and Eastern Europe. Nine countries of the region participate in this progamme: the Netherlands, the initiator of the programme, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Byelorussia, and Moldova.
In 1996, Animus opened a centre for the rehabilitation of women, adolescents, and children who are victims of violence, as an alternative to the widespread institutional treatment of victims of violence in Bulgaria. The centre operates a 24-hour hot line.
According to statistics provided to The Echo, in 2003, Animus received a total of 113 calls on their help-line. Nineteen of these came from victims of violence, 53 from potential victims, and 23 from relatives.
Animus provides shelter and psychological therapy for women who have become victims of domestic and sexual violence, as well as women who have survived trafficking.
The name Animus is borrowed from K.G. Jung's terminology, in which "animus" is used to denote the subconscious in a woman's soul. "Animus" is the source of problems in the spiritual world of women, but also the creative power for solving them.
