Terem staff face charges

Thu, Jul 03 2003 15:00 CET 322 Views
PROSECUTORS have filed charges in court against six former employees of the Turgovishte branch of the Terem military factory and the Poldis exporting company.

The former executive director of Terem, Vlado Vladov, Poldis employees Petar Sinapov, Sotyan Naidenov and Mihail Georgiev, as well as Terem Turgovishte employees Valentin Tahchiev and Plamen Petrov are facing charges related to illegal export of goods of potential dual use.

The six will be held responsible for exporting 150 reducers, worth $ 1 100 000, to Syria, which is subject to an arms embargo.

The controversy surrounding the parts broke out last November, only 10 days before Bulgaria was invited to join NATO.

Investigators said military production was exported to Syria by Poldis through the meditation of Rodeos Investment.

Two deputy ministers of defence, Mehmed Jaffer and Georgi Paskov, accepted political responsibility and resigned.

Vladov was fired and an investigation against him was initiated.

Less than a month ago Tahchiev and Naidenov, who had been involved in a similar deal in 2000, were given suspended sentences.

In 2001-2002, also from the Turgovishte branch of Terem, 50 engines and 50 transmission boxes for T55 tanks were exported to Syria.

Former defence minister Boiko Noev was charged with malpractice in connection to the case.
