OLYMPIC biathlon champion from Nagano 1998, Ekaterina Dafovska, began the new year in the same fashion as she bade goodbye to the old one: with a marvellous victory.
The 27-year-old from the Rhodopes won the World Cup 7.5km sprint in the winter resort of Oberhof, Germany on January 8. Only two weeks earlier, the Slovakian resort Osrble witnessed Dafovska's 10km triumph.
The Oberhof victory was more than definitive; Dafovska finished 22 seconds ahead of second-placed Frenchwoman Sylvie Becaert. This allowed Dafovska to strengthen her position as leader in the general rankings of the World Cup.
On January 12, she was on her way to marking her third successive victory for the World Cup, but, close to the end of the 12.5km race, she was overtaken and finished just three seconds behind German Uschi Disl. Dafovska, however, continues to lead the general rankings with a total of 315 points, 11 points ahead of Becaert.
In between these two races, Dafovska took part, along with Pavlina Filipova, Irina Nikulchina and Radka Popova in the 4X6km relay. Several mistakes at the shooting range deprived the Bulgarians of a medal and they finished fourth. Dafovska's next competition will be the fifth round of the World Cup in Lahti, Finland, between February 6 and 9, while the rest of the team will rest until the European Championship in Forni Avoltri, Italy, from February 26 to March 3.
The Super Cup – a special game between Poland champion Wisla Krakow and Polish Cup winner Legia Warsaw was to be the first football event scheduled to take place at the venue.
In 2012, the Giants are again the underdogs, after finishing the regular season with a 9-7 record and barely qualifying for the playoffs, compared with the Patriots' 13-3 record.
