Shell celebrates 10 years and $90 million

After 10 years in Bulgaria, Shell is looking to do more.

"Shell's main contribution to Bulgaria is its investment in the economy and the people," Adrian Loader, president of Shell Europe Oil Products, said on Tuesday, during the 10th anniversary celebrations of Shell Bulgaria. "People are the basic value of Shell. They are our face for the society, they represent Shell's principles before the customers each day."

The "new" history of Shell in Bulgaria started in 1991. The first time the oil giant was represented in the country was in 1924. It left in 1940 but returned in the 1970s through a trade representative office. Royal Dutch/Shell established its Bulgarian branch on July 1, 1991.

In the past 10, years the company has managed to achieve remarkable success and build a stable position on the oil and oil products market in Bulgaria. Since August 1993, when the first petrol station of Shell in the village of Dragichevo was opened, the company has built and operated 71 stations in the country, and built and developed the Select chain of stores.

In the last few years, Shell Bulgaria has begun a series of marketing initiatives, through which it managed to present its new products to the market and differentiate them from those of its competitors. New brands include Shell Diesel Winter Formula and Shell V-Power.

Shell Bulgaria is now a leading provider of industrial and automobile lubricants. The Shell Helix family includes a full range of lubricants with international quality. The company also has a euroShell payment system which is intended to be an example of the idea of Europe with no boundaries because these credit cards can be used across the continent.

"The popularity of our brand is 99 per cent which is a remarkable achievement," said Loader. "Shell is engaged with the highest standards of managing the business. We have strict values and rules that all our employees have to observe. We call them 'Shell business principles.'"

Maintaining a high level of confidence is another challenge to the company and it says it needs to be one step ahead of customers' demands by offering high-quality products and services. This fully covers one of the main goals of Shell's mother company - to continue to focus first and foremost on the millions of Shell customers around the world whilst meeting society's expectations.

Lately, Shell Bulgaria has been attempting to enhance what is on offer through the network of Shell petrol stations by introducing differentiated fuels and convenience concepts.

"Shell Bulgaria is determined to continue with its policy of developing and expanding its investment, in relation to the market capacity and our search to be the favourite choice of Bulgarian customers," said Radko Stamenov, chairman of the board of directors of Shell Bulgaria.

According to company officials, Shell's investment in Bulgaria so far has reached $90 million. Shell Bulgaria has an ongoing investment program and plans to further expand its presence in the local market. The company would not give specific details on the program or other future initiatives.

"Shell believes in Bulgaria's future and our goal is to be the preferred foreign business partner of Bulgaria," said Loader.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Shell Bulgaria decided to support the national project of KAT (the traffic control police) and the Road Safety Commission of the Ministry of Transport for ensuring traffic security. Shell will participate with its own money and will work to attract other sponsors.

Lyubov Kostova was appointed country manager of British Council Bulgaria effective January 1, replacing Tony Buckby, who left in October 2011 to take a similar position at British Council Greece. Kostova has been with British Council Bulgaria for 11 years, as public communications manager and, since 2008, as the head of project and partnerships department. Prior to joining the British Council, Kostova was head of international activities at the National Academy for Theatre and Cinema Arts (NATFIZ). She has a degree in Indian studies from Kliment Ohridski Sofia University.

Stefan Apostolov is the new chief executive of CEZ Razpredelenie Bulgaria, the power transmission subsidiary of Czech energy company CEZ in the country. He replaces interim chief executive Ales Damm, who remains the chairperson of the CEZ Razpredelenie management board. Apostolov has 30 years of experience in the energy sector, joining CEZ in 2007 as director of customer service and was later appointed as head of business development. Apostolov has a master's degree in electric systems from the Belorussian National Technical University in Minsc, management diplomas from Open University London and New Bulgarian University, as well as a master's degree in business administration from Plovdiv University.

Valentina Dikanska is the new general manager of chemical industry giant BASF subsidiary in Bulgaria, taking over from Herbert Fisch, BASF vice president for Southeastern Europe. Dikanska, who started her career as an expert in the Finance Ministry, joined BASF Bulgaria as director of finance and administration in 2002. She becomes the first Bulgarian to hold the top management position in the company in its 40-year history on the Bulgarian market. Dikanska holds a master's degree in economics from the University for National and World Economy in Sofia.

Alexander Albin has been appointed chief executive of fuel distributor Rompetrol Bulgaria, replacing Nichita Sorin, who left to become chief executive of Rompetrol Gaz in Romania. Albin was previously chief executive of Rompetrol Georgia. He has more than 15 years of experience in the oil and gas industry; prior to joining Romania's oil group Rompetrol in 2008 as an adviser, he oversaw operations at Atyrau refinery in Kazakhstan, owned by Rompetrol's parent company KazMunaiGaz. He previously held top management positions at two other leading Kazakh oil and gas companies.
