Shop Art sells new thoughts

The three-year-old group known as March 8 will attempt to attract women into thinking about their values for two successive days in the Sheraton Hotel's underpass on June 22 and 23 (5pm to 7pm).

The seven women in the group have individual performances and present a common point of view on the mentality and values of women.

The project is aimed at restoring balance in a male dominated society. The woman's view of the cultural, political and social situation in the country will be the curer of evils, said Maria Vassileva, curator of the concept for the performance.

According to her, March 8 is the only Bulgarian group of artists which freely discusses these matters through the means of visual language. Their serious yet ironic approach raises questions and discussions of the woman's role in society and the role of the female artist. Equality between the sexes is the core of the performance on Friday.

They have invited two guests for this action (as they call it). Daniela Kostova, a guest with the show, is taking part with a grotesque poster mocking the fake folk aesthetics around us. She said that this activity attempts to remove art from its conventional forms. "The poster resembles a promotion for the latest commercial folk song with a lustful vision and human breasts staring from the wall.

"I simply try to break out the myth of the beautiful Bulgarian female stuck in front of the cooker who never takes off her apron to find time for herself," she said. Both sense of humour and regret for the establishment of the myth are presented on the face of Kostova, who represents herself and her identity. "Even cynicism is obvious in all the works from the street performance Shop Art. A provoking face is able to push you deep into thinking."

Nadejda Liahova isolates a busker in a soundproof glass space. The singer will be wearing a national costume but will be in the stressing and confusing glass environment. The busker is full of self-pity because she cannot be heard.

Alla Georgieva plays with aesthetics by replacing a fragrant spray with a protection spray, which evaporates into people's eyes and most of all into her own. This type of aesthetics traces back to reality and thinking.

The woman as a market user, the woman as a family caretaker and the woman as an object are the basic concepts of Shop Art. These are carefully and cleverly mixed in with routine topics and events.
