THE Sofia Film Fest will kick-off with some re-enacted clashes from ancient Gaul - in the premiere of the French-Canadian super-production Vercingetorix, shot in Bulgaria by Bulgarian director of photography Stefan Ivanov.

A total of 80 movies will be screened at the fest - on from March 15 to April 1, of which 50 are being shown for the first time in Bulgaria. A total of 30 international films will only be shown here at the fest.

Some of the international movies will be presented by their directors. World-famous Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi will be among the fest guests. Two of his pictures - Life as a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease and Hidden Treasures - are on the programme.

Also expected as guests are Russian director and actor Nikolai Burlyaev, American director Lech Kowalski and Hungarian director Tamas Sas.

The director of Vercingetorix, Jacques Dorfman, and executive producers Patrik Sandren and Denni Sharve will attend the official premiere - on March 15 in Hall 1 at the National Palace of Culture (NDK).

Particular accent is expected to be focused on Yugoslav Panorama. Yugoslavia will participate with six movies shot over the last decade. Yugoslav directors Srdjan Karanovic, Milutin Petrovic and Dusan Makaveev will also be special guests.

Most of the movies will be shown in NDK (Hall 1) and at its Lumiere Cinema - Eurimages. Selected European movies will be shown at the Globus cinema (2 Solunska Street). Oscar-nominated films will be presented at Dom na Kinoto (37 Exarch Jossif Street) and the rest at the Odeon (1 Patriarch Evtimii Boulevard).

From March 22 to March 24, the Euro-Bulgarian Cultural Centre will present different video productions of new and classical films. The international programme is selected by Montevideo Centre, Amsterdam. Bulgarian titles are selected by the Interspace centre for media arts. The programme includes the films Heading South (Netherlands), Voice Windows (Iceland/U.S.), Gold Pieces (Korea/U.S.), The Recording Messenger (Korea/U.S.) and She Did See... (Bulgaria/Netherlands).

The Film Fest, held under the patronage of Sofia Mayor Stefan Stefanski, is actually part of a broader event - the Sofia Music and Film Fest, split into two main parts - Sofia Film Fest and Euro Jazz Sofia.

Euro Jazz Sofia 2001 will start at the end of March. Concerts will be performed on March 30, March 31 and April 1 at the National Theatre Ivan Vazov. There will also be special music performances at the clubs Mr Punch and Swinging Hall.

Sofia Film Fest 2001 will end with the premiere of the Bulgarian movie Nedelia (Sunday), directed by Alexander Morfov, on March 29.
